About the Saga 35
Designed by Robert Perry as a follow on to the very successful Saga 43, the Saga 35 is a modern, high performance, ocean cruiser for the experienced and discriminating sailor. The build quality is excellent and the boats were designed for long duration liveaboard cruising and built with first rate materials.
Hull #1 was launched in 1999. This vessel is hull #2, launched in 2000. Eleven boats were completed.
Bob Perry has said:
“For a number of reasons the Saga 35 is near and dear to my heart. It’s a hot rod. I would not call it tender at all. It has a powerful rig. I think it is the perfect size boat. I would love to own one.”
Performance
These are strong indications of a very quick cruising boat.

Hull and Keel
Above the waterline, the gelcoat shows well with only expected signs of age.
Below the waterline, the bottom was stripped in 2021 and re-coated with 2.5 layers of Interprotect 2000 epoxy, followed by two coats of VC17. Additional VC17 has been applied for subsequent seasons.
The owner reports the boat to be accident free.
The external lead keel has a modest bulb for stability, and the 4’11” draft is ideal for the Bahamas or other shallow destinations.
Deck. Rig and Sails
The sail plan is heavily influenced by short-handed ocean racing and results in a boat that is powerful yet easily handled by a single person or a couple. There are always two headsails available – a smaller jib on the inner forestay (optionally self-tacking) for working to windward, with a larger genoa forward for power when reaching. Both are on Harken roller furlers.
The two-tone deck gelcoat provides a welcome indication of the location of non-skid areas, which have been molded with a tan gelcoat and offer excellent footing.
The keel-stepped mast and boom were built by Offshore Spars. The mast is supported by a split-adjustable backstay, lower, mid and upper shrouds with a 2-spreader arrangement and two headstays. All shrouds are stainless steel 1×19 wire.

Deck Hardware
Sail handling hardware is primarily Harken equipment, including:
Mainsail runs on a Tides Marine track and stows down the lazy jacks into a stack pack style cover on the boom.
Generous, sturdy stainless handrails eliminate maintenance.
Extra-tall 30″ lifelines provide better safety than on most boats, and jacklines are included for both side decks to make going forward on a tether safe and easy. There are three tether attachment points in the cockpit, too.
The slotted aluminum toe rail provides universal attachment points the full length of the deck.

Cockpit and Transom
With the Saga 35’s maximum beam carried well aft, Bob Perry gives us a terrific cockpit and transom for cruising.
Bench seats with custom cushions are 6′ 6″ long, enough for sleeping under the stars or snoozing under way. There is a raised portion of the floor for bracing your feet on while heeled.
A subtle bridge deck keeps water out of the cabin while making access easy. The walk-through transom includes easy access to the water for swimming or dinghy docking, with a nice fold-down ladder for swimming. A longer ladder is included ready for installation.
The pedestal supports a Whitlock rack-and-pinion steering system so we have no cables to worry about or need adjustment. A Navpod provides a housing for the Raymarine chartplotter, and the single-lever engine controls are right there. Of course there is a folding table on the forward side of the pedestal.
A custom Klacko arch is solidly built and provides support for the overhead solar panels, the canvas bimini and whatever antennas you need. A wind generator and mount are stored ashore.
The arch includes a hefty aft bow and running tackle that forms a sturdy davit system for the dinghy.
A cavernous cockpit lazarette is to port, with exceptional volume and a built-in ladder steps to facilitate access to all your equipment and toys.
The vented propane has enough room for two tanks, one active and one spare.
The dodger forward provides good shelter, and a connector piece will close the gap to the bimini. Two side curtains provide addition protection from the elements.
Courtesy lights are built in to the arch and Navpod.
Accommodations
The interior accommodations are very nicely built. The joinery is hand crafted, hand rubbed and satin varnished cherry wood. The upholstery is clean, having been removed and steam cleaned just 2 years ago, and shows little signs of wear.
With four overhead hatches and six opening portlights the cabin is bright and airy, with 6’5″ of headroom
The salon includes settees port and starboard, with a very nice drop-leaf table on the centerline. The aft end of the starboard settee meets the navigation station. A Dickson propane furnace is installed for extra warmth when needed. ( Service required).
The private, roomy, forward stateroom has direct private access to the head compartment. The bed is a generous 52″ wide with length ranging from 6′ 4″ up to 7′ 6″ at it’s longest. A cushioned bench is beside the bed. Storage shelves are complemented by a nice hanging locker. An extra-thick premium mattress is present for a great night’s sleep.
The aft stateroom also offers generous headroom, its own hanging locker and a plenty of space on the bed. An overhead opening hatch and another hatch into the cockpit provide light and ventilation.
Galley
The galley is exceptionally well thought out and well equipped, with plenty of storage space.
The 12 Vdc refrigerator with freezer compartment is on the aft side, with an innovative opening lid design that provides good access to the large, well insulated space. The compressor is readily accessed in the cockpit locker.
The three-burner gimbaled stove/oven is on the port side, and on the forward side of the U-shaped counter we have a good storage bin under the counter for pots and pans or appliances.
The deep, double stainless steel sink is excellent. Hot and cold pressure water are available, as is a backup floor foot pump if needed.
Trash is stowed in the easily accessed locker under the sink, and grab rails are provided in front of the stove and vertically near the sink.
Selected galleyware is included, as you will see on your visit.
The result is highly functional galley that allows food preparation and cleanup both under way and moored.
Head Compartment
The head compartment is located forward of the salon, and has two doors allowing private access from the forward stateroom or from the salon.
The boat is currently fitted with a composting marine toilet which eliminates the odours usually found with conventional marine toilets with their holding tank and hoses. Through-hulls remain should a new owner wish to convert to a conventional toilet.
Hot and cold pressure water are available at the wash basin and the shower head.
The fully molded fiberglass pan construction permits easy cleaning, and an opening hatch provides fresh air and light.
Electronics
Electrical
Let’s start with the justifiably famous main electrical panel setup on the Saga 35.
The main circuit breaker panels ( AC and DC ) are attractive and well laid out. They are on a cherry panel that folds down to reveal the high quality distribution panel using high end terminal blocks and wire raceways. Each wire is numbered and documented, providing an exceptional level of ease for maintenance, trouble shooting and upgrades.
Further aft near the batteries, we have another very neatly laid out and well organized set of Main DC switches and fuses.
Batteries
The start battery is a conventional lead acid battery rated for 850 MCA.
The two house batteries are Group 31 AGM, rated at 103 A-H each, for a combined 206 Amp-hour capacity. ( new in 2020 )

The Westerbeke 35B has seen good maintenance by the current owner – annual fall oil changes, etc. Cooling system was flushed and all hoses replaced in 2022.
A dripless shaft seal is easily accessed, as is the transmission and raw water strainer from the aft cabin.
A Brunton Autoprop is installed, providing superb thrust in both forward and reverse rotation, while feathering for reduced drag under sail.

Manufacturer Provided Description
The Saga 35 was designed by Bob Perry, who is well known for other performance cruisers. The Saga 35 may be built for speed, but she is a cruiser through and through.
Her near-plumb bow with massive SS bowsprit and maximized sailing length are a direct result of Mr. Perry’s intentions. Under way, the Saga 35 extends her sailing waterline to over 34 feet. This longer waterline creates a yacht with the hull speed and sailing potential of a conventional 40-foot cruiser, yet the modest beam and moderately light displacement create less drag to provide the nearly effortless sailing of a smaller boat.
The easily driven hull form requires less energy to attain speeds comparable to heavier, beamier cruisers. Lower loads on sails and sheets mean less stress on the boat’s structure, resulting in longer life. Under sail, the Saga 35 will reel off the miles with uncommon ease. With the standard diesel engine, estimated top speed is 8 knots with 7.3 knots at normal cruise rpm.
There is plenty of storage in the cockpit. To port of the helm is a propane locker for two 20-pound tanks. The cockpit lazarette is about 5 1-2 feet deep, allowing for massive amounts of storage, with steps to get in and out. To starboard, there is a vented locker for carrying a fuel can. The cockpit features 6-foot 6-inch seats for stargazing.
Also, the 35 features the Saga walkout transom – no strenuous climbing up or over a coaming, simply walk out at dinghy boarding level. A transom door closes off the opening, keeping pets and kids safely on board. Molded-in foot braces make the crew comfortable even when heeled.
There are six opening ports, all of which are stainless steel, and four overhead hatches, providing excellent ventilation. Stainless steel grab rails run the length of the coachhouse – a low maintenance bonus, but also an important safety feature.Other safety features are the 30-inch lifelines (24 inch is standard) and safety harness padeyes in the cockpit.
Down below, the interior is soft and cozy. All joinery is hand crafted, hand rubbed, and satin varnished in cherry wood. Soft fabrics give the cabin a luxurious feel. As with the Saga 43, the narrow beam is not evident below as the 35 is styled with the same principles as her larger sister. The 6-foot 5-inch headroom and open concept saloon is both practical and efficient for offshore sailing and dockside entertaining.
The navigation – chart table and electrical panel are at the end of the starboard settee. Behind the fold-down panel, the wiring is numbered to correspond with a maintenance reference that identifies and describes its function.
The galley is U-shaped with a three burner stove in center. There is counter space, an ice box with an optional freezer – refrigerator, and plenty of shelves and drawers for storage. The galley has a foot pump, although hot and cold pressure water is standard.
The aft cabin is located on the starboard side of the boat. This cabin offers great standing headroom in the area immediately in front of the bunk and one cedar-lined hanging locker.
The V-berth is roomy. The 52-inch wide bunk is 6-feet 4-inches at its shortest point and 7-feet 6-inches at its longest point. Deep, long shelves run along the hull and there is a large cedar-lined hanging locker. A small cushioned bench beside the bunk is stylish, and doubles as a good seat for those getting dressed.
The head is accessed through the saloon or the V-berth, which helps maintain some privacy when there are guests on board. The head is equipped with a standard sink, toilet, large mirror, and a roomy cupboard for storage. The shower boasts a separate shower stall with a semicircular acrylic shower door on tracks. The head module is a one-piece molded fiberglass shell, designed with minimum trim or dirt catching corners, providing a seamless sanitary unit that is a cinch to clean.
