Rabaska | 1978 Alberg 37 Sloop

Wiarton, ON, CA

About

The Alberg 37 is a highly regarded classic bluewater design - solidly built, full keel, protected rudder and prop and with a hull designed to keep her people safe and comfortable in all conditions. The beautiful classic lines are paired with long overhangs and an easily driven relatively narrow hull that is lovely to look at.

All reasonable offers will be considered, the owners are motivated to sell.

This specific boat has already crossed the Atlantic, visiting Azores and Gibraltar under a previous owner. She was re-powered in 2001 with a 39 hp Yanmar 3JHE3E diesel engine, with only 732 hours on it so far. The hull was re-finished with a very nice Awlgrip paint job in 2018. A good 2024 survey is available to those seriously interested.

Rabaska is attractively priced for a new owner who wants an affordable way to start in a solid boat and upgrade as you go, or a sound platform to fit out for your dream trip on bluewater.

Hull, Deck and Rig

Whitby Boat Works is renowned for the construction of strong, durable boats. With a fiberglass hull and deck completed by wood trim, the long overhangs, graceful sheer line and a raised counter transom, she is a great looking and sea-kindly vessel. The hull was re-finished with a nice Awlgrip paint job in 2018.

The deck includes a substantial molded-in toe rail to keep her people onboard. The companionway is offset to port to create more room in the galley below to starboard. The compact cockpit with a generous aft deck ensures stability in the event of being pooped by a following wave. That volume aft doubles as handy lazarette.

The full length keel with keel-mounted rudder also protects the prop from errant fishing gear or other lines. The generous rocker in the hull makes for smooth, comfortable movement through the waves without slamming.

The spar is a substantial aluminum section, keel-stepped of course. A single set of spreaders supports the shrouds, which have been updated, and a spare set of shrouds is available. The backstay is dual, (not split) from the masthead to each quarter of the transom. Permanently mounted steps allow safe and convenient access to go up the rig when needed.

The deck canvas includes a dodger frame and canvas dodger. A matching mainsail cover is included.

Sail Inventory

The mainsail has two sets of reefing points, and is serviceable.

The #3 jib included looks to have sailcloth in good condition although the UV strip should be re-stitched.. The genoa furler is mounted but in need of service.

There is a Triton Sails DRS – downwind reaching sail. It appears older but usable, although the current owner reports not having used it.

There are two spare headsails, both from Triton Sails that appear to have very good condition sailcloth. Neither is currently fitted with a UV strip, but with that addition they should make good headsails.

Accommodations

Entering the cabin from the companionway we have the galley on starboard with a sink, propane stove/oven and a large cold-plate style refrigerator driven by shore power or the engine.

Opposite on port, a navigation desk is situated at the forward end of the quarterberth. The salon offers an unusual amount of flexibility. The port settee can be converted to a double, while on starboard the settee slides out a little to create one berth while a pilot berth above and outboard is fitted with a lee cloth for snug, secure snoozing under way.

The salon table can be folded away up against the bulkhead or lowered for a table for two. A fold-out leaf converts it to a table for four, while an additional leaf stowed in the hanging locker adds even more seating.

At the forward end of the salon we have a propane cabin heater. On the white overhead there are wooden battens that neatly tie into the upper handholds to provide a very traditional look to the cabin.

Going forward we have the head compartment on port with a generous hanging locker to starboard. The master stateroom forward consists of a vee-berth with stowage all round and under.

Total sleeping capacity is seven persons, of which four places are independent of the settees. Well suited for a family, extended family or offshore passage crew. Interior headroom is generous.

The teak-and-holly flooring has been renewed in places. The overall feeling is one of warmth, security and tradition.

Testimonials

George Ayers was terrific to work with over the past few months as I evaluated, negotiated and purchased a CS 30 that Harris & Ellis Yachts had listed in Sarnia. He was patient, thorough and totally professional. I have owned nine sailboats in my 50+ years as a sailor. My experience with George and Harris & Ellis Yachts has been my best boat buying experience to date.

George did an amazing job of selling our CS 30 sailboat. A caring and compassionate person, he went above and beyond our expectations and never stopped working on our behalf to get the job done. We are forever grateful for his dedication to his work. Please let him know how much we think of him!

I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the outstanding service provided by Greg. Last October, my husband suddenly passed away due to a heart attack, leaving behind two boats. Greg was instrumental in helping me sell the first boat quickly and at a very good price. As for the second boat, due to my husband's declining health in his final year, the boat had been sitting idle at the dock near our home for over a year. Greg demonstrated the utmost professionalism in cleaning, maintaining, and preparing the boat for sale. He put in a tremendous amount of work, understanding the niche market for this boat, and always kept me informed of his progress without burdening me with the stress of the process. Last week, Greg successfully sold the second boat, and I am very satisfied with the price achieved. His professionalism and confidence in his work gave me a much-needed sense of security during such a difficult time.

Thank you for all your work in facilitating the sale of our dad's boat. Jake and I really appreciate all the hard work you put into it with the many visits, paperwork, etc. A special mention has to go out to Grant for teaching me how to fold the sails!

As first-time boat buyers and as foreigners wanting to buy a cruising catamaran in the US, we knew we needed a reliable broker that had our best interests in mind. John Heintzman was just that, and more! He was extremely committed to understanding what we were looking for, gave great advice, and guided us through the purchase process with great patience and knowledge. All in all, we felt very well taken care of.

I feel compelled to reach out about the absolutely wonderful experience that I have had with Grant and Patricia Bowlby. I completed the purchase of a boat yesterday and I couldn’t be happier. They were so helpful, kind, and patient. This was my first experience with a broker, and I think I’ve found the best.

I can’t thank Ewan Campbell enough for the super job he did in selling G, making up for my lack of experience in this realm and patiently searching for just the right buyer and a win-win for seller and buyer alike.

It was a wonderful experience selling A with Jeff Cole’s expert assistance. Thank you for simplifying a complicated process. Your patience and kindness are especially appreciated.

I just wanted to thank Jeff Cole for all his hard work. He was very professional and effective.
