2024 Pre-Show Newsletter

Pre-Show Newsletter January 2024

From our dock to yours

Welcome to 2024 and our 48th year of helping boaters enjoy every aspect of our shared passion. With worldwide uncertainty looming on many fronts, the pleasures of boating still support Kenneth Grahame’s century-old observation that ‘there is nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”
When our team isn’t messing about in boats, we love to talk about them. And that’s what we’ll be doing again this year at the Toronto International Boat Show. We look forward to seeing you, discussing our listings with you in person, and hearing about your boat if you are thinking of selling this year. We’re here to help introduce new boats and boaters and to continue to support our many clients.
See you at the Boat Show.

How to extend the life of your smoke and CO detectors

Winter has finally arrived, and our boats are huddled under their covers for the season. You loaded up your engine and plumbing with antifreeze, but did you do anything for your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors? Some detectors come with built-in lifetime batteries, typically rated for a seven-year lifespan. Check the documentation from the manufacturer—you may find that winter temperatures will shorten the longevity of these devices through reduced battery life due to low-temperature exposure. On our boat, the marine-grade CO detectors are susceptible, so we’ve brought them home for the winter. They will, of course, be amongst the first equipment to be re-installed in the spring.

Want to buy a US boat?

Over the years, we have helped many Canadian customers to buy boats in the United States. We can act on your behalf to search for and purchase any yacht that is listed by any broker.
In many cases, if you’ve already found a vessel that you think might be a perfect fit for you and your family, we can inspect the vessel on your behalf and present you with an inspection report. While this report is not a substitute for a marine survey, it can help you separate the “good boats” from the “not-so-good ones.”
We are experienced in cross-border transactions and can help you to import the vessel to Canada. That includes assistance with navigating duties/NAFTA, taxes, cross-border transportation, customs, and proper paperwork like the USCG notarized bill of sales and statements of origin.
Our customers say they like that we handle all your funds through our account here in Canada, and we don’t release them to the U.S. Brokerage company that is listing the vessel until we have everything required to satisfactorily transfer the vessel’s title to you.
We can also help to arrange structural and mechanical surveys, sea trials, ground and sea transportation, and just about any other aspect of the sale and after-sale service.
If you fall in love with a boat south of the border, or want to widen your search, don’t let location be a deterrent. We’re here to help.

Pacific Seacraft 37 Cutter

Speed and comfort without compromise to seaworthiness were the goals Bill Crealock set out to accomplish when he designed what would become the Pacific Seacraft Crealock 37. This stout and versatile boat is just as comfortable in a stiff breeze on a long bluewater voyage as she is cruising the coast on the weekend.

Testimonials

George Ayers was terrific to work with over the past few months as I evaluated, negotiated and purchased a CS 30 that Harris & Ellis Yachts had listed in Sarnia. He was patient, thorough and totally professional. I have owned nine sailboats in my 50+ years as a sailor. My experience with George and Harris & Ellis Yachts has been my best boat buying experience to date.

George did an amazing job of selling our CS 30 sailboat. A caring and compassionate person, he went above and beyond our expectations and never stopped working on our behalf to get the job done. We are forever grateful for his dedication to his work. Please let him know how much we think of him!

I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the outstanding service provided by Greg. Last October, my husband suddenly passed away due to a heart attack, leaving behind two boats. Greg was instrumental in helping me sell the first boat quickly and at a very good price. As for the second boat, due to my husband's declining health in his final year, the boat had been sitting idle at the dock near our home for over a year. Greg demonstrated the utmost professionalism in cleaning, maintaining, and preparing the boat for sale. He put in a tremendous amount of work, understanding the niche market for this boat, and always kept me informed of his progress without burdening me with the stress of the process. Last week, Greg successfully sold the second boat, and I am very satisfied with the price achieved. His professionalism and confidence in his work gave me a much-needed sense of security during such a difficult time.

Thank you for all your work in facilitating the sale of our dad's boat. Jake and I really appreciate all the hard work you put into it with the many visits, paperwork, etc. A special mention has to go out to Grant for teaching me how to fold the sails!

As first-time boat buyers and as foreigners wanting to buy a cruising catamaran in the US, we knew we needed a reliable broker that had our best interests in mind. John Heintzman was just that, and more! He was extremely committed to understanding what we were looking for, gave great advice, and guided us through the purchase process with great patience and knowledge. All in all, we felt very well taken care of.

I feel compelled to reach out about the absolutely wonderful experience that I have had with Grant and Patricia Bowlby. I completed the purchase of a boat yesterday and I couldn’t be happier. They were so helpful, kind, and patient. This was my first experience with a broker, and I think I’ve found the best.

I can’t thank Ewan Campbell enough for the super job he did in selling G, making up for my lack of experience in this realm and patiently searching for just the right buyer and a win-win for seller and buyer alike.

It was a wonderful experience selling A with Jeff Cole’s expert assistance. Thank you for simplifying a complicated process. Your patience and kindness are especially appreciated.

I just wanted to thank Jeff Cole for all his hard work. He was very professional and effective.
